Rwanda Electric Vehicle Update — Are EVs Available for Rental in Kigali 2026?

Rwanda has made electric vehicle adoption a national priority. The government has introduced EV import incentives, the national electric grid is increasingly powered by clean energy, and Kigali has been installing charging infrastructure across the city. If you follow Rwanda's development news, you have probably seen the headlines about the country's EV ambitions.

So the question we are getting more and more at Rent Cars Kigali is: can I rent an electric vehicle in Kigali?

The Honest 2026 Answer

As of 2026, fully electric vehicles are not yet widely available in the Kigali car rental market. The EV transition in Rwanda's rental sector is underway but has not yet reached the point where tourists and business travelers can reliably book an EV for a multi-day trip.

The main reasons:

  • Charging infrastructure — Kigali now has a growing number of public charging stations, but outside the capital, charging points are rare. A upcountry road trip to Musanze or Akagera in an EV would currently require very careful planning around charging stops.
  • Range anxiety on Rwanda's routes — Many tourist routes involve significant elevation changes which affect EV range. The Kigali to Musanze route, for example, involves substantial climbing and descending that can reduce real-world range significantly.
  • Fleet investment timing — Rental companies are cautiously watching the infrastructure develop before committing to large EV fleet purchases.

What We Currently Offer Instead

While we do not yet offer pure EVs, our fleet includes some of the most fuel-efficient modern vehicles available in Rwanda:

  • Toyota Corolla Cross 2024 — Modern, fuel-efficient crossover. Approximately 8–10 litres/100km.
  • Kia Sorento 2024 — Modern engine with good fuel economy for its size.
  • Toyota RAV4 2023/2024 — Updated engine with improved efficiency over older RAV4 generations.

Our EV Plans

We are actively watching Rwanda's charging infrastructure development and evaluating EV additions to our fleet. As the infrastructure matures and makes upcountry EV travel reliable, we plan to introduce electric options. If this is important to your booking decision, ask us directly about our current EV timeline.

The Sustainable Travel Alternative Right Now

If sustainable travel is important to you, consider our newer model vehicles for lower emissions, travel during off-peak hours to reduce traffic-related idle emissions, and supporting Rwanda's national parks where vehicle entry fees directly fund conservation.
