Rwanda Budget Travel Guide -- $100 a Day or Less
Rwanda's reputation for high costs is partly deserved -- gorilla permits are $1,500, some lodges charge $500 a night, and the conference hotel scene is genuinely pricey. But for the parts of Rwanda that do not involve gorilla permits and luxury lodges, the country is far more affordable than its reputation suggests. Here is how to travel Rwanda well for under $100 a day.
The Gorilla Trekking Question
Let's address it directly: gorilla trekking at $1,500 per person is not a budget activity. But Rwanda has extraordinary experiences beyond gorillas -- Akagera safari, Nyungwe Forest, Lake Kivu, Kigali itself -- all accessible at very reasonable costs. Plan around the gorillas if budget is the priority, or save specifically for one gorilla trekking day and budget tightly on everything else.
Budget Accommodation
- Kigali guesthouses: $15-30/night for a clean private room
- Musanze guesthouses: $20-40/night
- Rubavu (Lake Kivu) basic accommodation: $20-35/night
- Huye (Butare) near Nyungwe: $15-25/night at university guesthouses
Budget Food
- Local restaurants (rice, beans, vegetables): $1-3 per meal
- Roadside brochettes (2 skewers + drink): $2-3
- Market fruit (avocados, bananas, passion fruit): $1-2/day
- Budget daily food total: $8-15 per day eating well
Budget Transport
The single biggest budget decision in Rwanda is transport. Options from cheapest to most flexible:
- Public bus (Nyabugogo to Musanze/Rubavu/Huye): $2-5 per trip -- cheapest but no flexibility, no stops, luggage on the roof
- Shared minibus taxis (matatus): $1-3 for shorter routes
- Car rental split between travellers: A RAV4 at $60/day split 3 ways = $20/person/day -- often cheaper than bus + local taxis combined, with total freedom
For 3 or more people travelling together, splitting a rental car is genuinely budget travel. Book a car from $35/day.
