Rwanda Accessible Travel -- The Honest 2026 Guide
Rwanda's accessibility infrastructure is improving but is not yet at the level of Europe or North America. This guide gives honest, specific information for travellers with mobility limitations, wheelchair users, and those with other disabilities planning a Rwanda trip.
Kigali Accessibility
- Kigali's newer buildings (Convention Centre, Marriott, Radisson, Norrsken House) have good wheelchair access with lifts and ramps
- Older guesthouses and many restaurants have steps without ramps -- call ahead to confirm before booking
- Pavements (sidewalks): uneven in many areas of Kigali. Wheelchair navigation in the city is challenging outside the main boulevards.
- Bolt and taxis: request the largest available vehicle -- estate cars and SUVs accommodate wheelchairs more easily. Our chauffeur service can arrange specific vehicle configurations.
Gorilla Trekking with Mobility Limitations
Standard gorilla trekking involves 1-6 hours of steep, uneven forest walking and is not accessible for most wheelchair users or those with significant mobility limitations. However, Rwanda Development Board has created a specific program called Gorilla Experience for Disabled Visitors -- a shorter, lower-terrain trek option at Volcanoes NP. Akagera National Park
Akagera is Rwanda's most accessible national park for visitors with mobility limitations. The game viewing is done from inside a vehicle on gravel tracks. You do not need to leave the car for most wildlife encounters -- the animals come to you. Our vehicles can be requested with specific seating and space configurations for wheelchair transfer.
Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu's main towns (Rubavu, Karongi) have some accessible lakefront hotels with flat terrain access to the waterfront. Boat tours are available -- ability to board depends on the specific boat and dock. Ask hotels directly about boat accessibility before booking.
Car Rental for Disabled Travellers
We do not currently have hand-control adapted vehicles in our fleet. However, for drivers with upper-body mobility and passengers with mobility limitations, we can arrange:
- Vehicles with the most accessible seating configurations
- Chauffeur-driven service removing the driving requirement entirely
- Assistance loading and unloading wheelchairs at pickup and return
- Vehicles with maximum boot space for folding wheelchair storage
