Rwanda has two rainy seasons — the long rains from March to May and the shorter rains in October and November. Many travelers specifically choose these periods for the lush green landscapes, lower tourist numbers, and cheaper accommodation. But rainy season driving in Rwanda requires specific knowledge and the right vehicle.
At Rent Cars Kigali, we send hundreds of vehicles upcountry during rainy season every year. Here is what we actually see on the roads.
Roads That Become Problematic in Rain
National Park Internal Roads
Nyungwe Forest — The internal forest roads can become extremely muddy and slippery. Only Land Cruiser V8 or Prado recommended. RAV4 can manage but with caution on steeper sections.
Akagera National Park — The laterite tracks inside the park turn into deep mud channels after heavy rain. A standard RAV4 risks getting stuck. Land Cruiser is strongly recommended during March–May.
Volcanoes National Park — The main road to Kinigi is tarmac and fine in all weather. The tracks to gorilla starting points can be muddy but manageable in a RAV4 2009 or newer.
Rural Upcountry Roads
Unpaved community roads in rural Rwanda can become impassable after heavy rain. If your itinerary involves remote villages or off-main-road destinations, always check conditions the day before and carry a shovel and basic recovery gear.
Main Highways
Good news: Rwanda's main intercity highways — Kigali to Musanze, Kigali to Huye, Kigali to Kayonza — are well-maintained tarmac and generally fine in all weather. Minor flooding can occasionally occur at low points but is usually cleared within hours.
