Musanze Caves -- Rwanda's Underground Wonder
Most visitors to Musanze spend their time looking up -- at volcanoes, gorillas, and the mountain skyline. The Musanze Caves invite you to look down into Rwanda's geological past. These ancient lava tubes were formed by volcanic activity from the Virunga volcanoes thousands of years ago. They stretch for several kilometres underground and have been used by local communities for centuries as a water source and shelter.
What Are the Musanze Caves?
- Ancient lava tubes stretching approximately 2 km underground
- Formed by flowing lava that cooled and hardened on the outside while the molten centre drained away
- Temperature inside: a cool 16-18 degrees regardless of outside weather
- Underground river flows through sections of the cave
- Bats and unique cave-adapted species live inside
Visiting the Caves
- Location: 3 km from Musanze town centre, signposted from the main road
- Entry fee: Approximately 5,000-10,000 RWF per person (confirm current rates at the entrance)
- Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours for the full guided tour
- Guide: Mandatory -- the caves are dark and a guide is essential for navigation and safety
- What to bring: Closed shoes (not sandals -- the cave floor is uneven and wet in places), a light jacket (it is cold inside), and a sense of adventure
- Opening hours: Approximately 7 AM to 5 PM daily
Combining the Caves with Gorilla Trekking
The Musanze Caves are the perfect afternoon activity for the day before your gorilla trek. You are already in Musanze, the caves are 10 minutes from most lodges, and the 2-hour tour fills an afternoon beautifully. Drive to the caves after checking in, explore, return for dinner, early bed, gorilla trek the next morning.
