Moving to Rwanda -- Expat Transport Guide 2026
Kigali has become one of Africa's most popular destinations for international development professionals, UN staff, embassy personnel, NGO workers, and private sector expats. If you are arriving for a 6-month posting, a 2-year contract, or a permanent move, transport is one of the first logistics to solve. This is the complete honest guide to getting around Kigali as an expat.
Your First 30 Days -- Short-Term Car Rental
When you first arrive in Kigali, you need to get around before your personal or organisational vehicle is sorted. Monthly car rental is the most practical bridge solution:
- No upfront vehicle purchase cost
- Insurance and maintenance included
- Upgrade or change vehicles as your needs become clear
- Our monthly rates start from $900 for a Toyota Vitz and from $1,500 for a RAV4
See our long-term car rental page for full monthly rates.
Should You Buy or Rent Long-Term in Kigali?
For postings under 18 months: renting is almost always better. Buying a vehicle in Rwanda involves import duty, registration, and the complication of reselling when you leave. For postings of 2 years or more: buying may make financial sense but the administration is significant.

Getting Around Kigali Daily
- Rental car (own or fleet): Best for regular commuting, client visits, and field trips
- Bolt: Good for city trips when your car is in use. See our Bolt Rwanda guide.
- Boda boda: Fastest in traffic for solo commutes. Requires a helmet (carry your own).
