Before you pick up your rental car and try to navigate Kigali for the first time, there is something worth knowing: Kigali traffic has improved enormously in recent years — but it still has specific pinch points that catch visitors off guard.
Here is the honest guide from Rent Cars Kigali — we navigate Kigali every single day.
How Bad Is Kigali Traffic, Really?
The honest answer: better than Nairobi, worse than you might expect from a city this size.
Kigali has approximately 1.4 million people and is growing rapidly. The road infrastructure cannot always keep pace with the growth. During peak hours, specific bottlenecks become very slow. But compared to Nairobi (where 3-hour cross-city commutes are normal) or Lagos — Kigali is manageable.
The Worst Traffic Times
- Morning peak: 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM Monday–Friday — Do not try to leave Kigali heading upcountry during this window if you can help it
- Evening peak: 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM Monday–Friday — Returning to Kigali from upcountry during this period adds 30–60 minutes to your journey
- Friday evenings: Particularly heavy as many Kigalians travel upcountry for the weekend
- Monday mornings: Return traffic from weekend creates bottlenecks on northern routes
Kigali's Worst Traffic Spots
Remera Roundabout
Possibly Kigali's most notorious traffic point. The junction where the airport road, Remera commercial area, and Kimironko road meet. Avoid 7:00–9:00 AM and 5:00–7:00 PM. The workaround: take Kibagabaga road further north to bypass.
Nyabugogo Bus Station Area
The main bus terminal area is congested nearly all day due to the volume of passengers and vendors. Avoid unless you specifically need to go there.
City Center / KN Avenue
The CBD is busy all day. If your destination is in the city center, plan extra time and consider the parallel roads one block off the main avenue.
Kicukiro / Airport Road
The road connecting Kigali city to the airport (KK15 Avenue) gets congested in both peak hours. For early morning flights, add 30–45 minutes to your airport transfer time during rush hour.
Best Times to Drive Across Kigali
- Best window: 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM or 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM on weekdays
- Good: Weekend mornings before 10:00 AM
- Avoid: Any weekday between 7–9 AM and 5–7:30 PM
Planning Your Day Around Kigali Traffic
For road trips leaving Kigali: depart before 7:00 AM or wait until after 9:30 AM. A 9:30 AM departure gets you through the worst of it and you still have plenty of daylight for any Rwanda destination.
For returning to Kigali: aim to arrive either before 4:30 PM or after 7:30 PM. If you are stuck in the peak, find a roadside restaurant and have dinner until traffic clears.
Using Google Maps for Kigali Traffic
Google Maps works excellently in Kigali and shows real-time traffic data. Enable traffic view before departure and it will route you around the worst congestion. The satellite view is also useful for understanding the city's layout before you start driving.
