Rubavu — still widely known by its former name Gisenyi — sits on the northern shore of Lake Kivu at the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is one of Rwanda's most relaxed and beautiful towns, and the drive from Kigali to get there is genuinely spectacular.
With a rental car from Rent Cars Kigali, this road trip is one of the best days you will spend in Rwanda.
Route Overview: Kigali to Rubavu
Distance: Approximately 160km
Drive time: 2.5 to 3 hours non-stop
Road condition: Excellent tarmac throughout
Best direction: Kigali ? Musanze ? Rubavu (scenic northern route)
The Route in Detail
Leave Kigali heading north on the RN2. The road climbs steadily out of the city through the Rulindo district, passing tea plantations and offering increasingly dramatic views. Continue north through Gakenke and into Musanze — a natural stopping point for lunch or fuel.
From Musanze, continue west toward Rubavu. This final section is arguably the most dramatic — the road skirts the base of the Virunga volcanoes, with the massive cone of Mount Karisimbi often visible on clear days. The descent toward the lake reveals Lake Kivu in all its glory — a vast blue expanse stretching to the horizon with the DRC visible across the water.
Best Stops Along the Way
- Rulindo tea plantations — Gorgeous green hillside scenery, great for a photo stop. About 45 minutes from Kigali.
- Musanze town — Fuel up, grab lunch at one of the local restaurants near the market. Also a great base for Volcanoes NP.
- Musanze Caves — A 45-minute detour off the main road worth making. Ancient lava tubes with an interesting history.
- Twin Lakes viewpoint (Burera & Ruhondo) — A short detour from Musanze to see two stunning crater lakes surrounded by volcanic peaks.
- First Lake Kivu view — As you descend toward Rubavu, there is a point where the lake suddenly appears below you. Pull over and photograph it.

Which Car for Kigali to Rubavu?
The entire route is excellent tarmac — a Toyota Corolla handles it perfectly in dry season. For the twin lakes detour and any off-road exploration around the northern lake shore, upgrade to a RAV4.
