Kigali is a beautiful city to drive in — but like any city, it has its frustrating moments. Rush hour gridlock, confusing roundabouts, sudden road closures for presidential motorcades... if you're new to driving a rental car in Kigali, this guide will save you time and frustration.
Kigali's Main Road Network
The city is organized around several key axes:
- KN (Kigali Nyarugenge) roads serve the city center and CBD
- KG (Kigali Gasabo) roads serve the northern and eastern suburbs
- KK (Kigali Kicukiro) roads serve the southern areas toward the airport
Worst Traffic Hotspots
- Remera roundabout — Brutal during 7–9 AM. Take an earlier departure or use the back road via Kibagabaga.
- Nyabugogo bus station area — Constant congestion, avoid except off-peak hours
- KN 4 Ave city center — Busy all day. Try parallel KN 3 Ave.
- Airport road (KK15) — Congested during morning and evening peaks
Best Time to Drive Across Kigali
- Best: 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM or 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM
- Avoid: 7:00–9:00 AM and 5:00–7:30 PM on weekdays
