What Is Actually Included in Your Kigali Car Rental - and What Is Not
Transparency matters. One of the most frustrating experiences in car rental anywhere in the world is paying a headline rate and then discovering a long list of extras at collection. Rent Cars Kigali does not operate that way - but you should still understand exactly what your kigali car rental covers before you confirm your booking. Here is the complete picture.
What Is Always Included - Every Booking, Every Vehicle
Comprehensive Third-Party Insurance
Every vehicle in the Rent Cars Kigali fleet carries valid comprehensive third-party insurance covering damage to other vehicles or property and personal injury to third parties in an accident caused by your rental vehicle. This insurance is not an optional add-on - it is built into the daily rate. You will never fail a police checkpoint insurance check with one of our vehicles.
Unlimited Mileage
There are no per-kilometre charges on any kigali car rental from Rent Cars Kigali. Drive from Kigali to Musanze, down to Nyungwe, across to Lake Kivu, back to Akagera and home - the mileage counter does not affect your bill. Many online aggregators and some local competitors cap mileage at 100-200 km/day and charge for overages. We do not.
Free Delivery - Airport and Hotel
Vehicle delivery to Kigali International Airport arrivals is completely free. Delivery to any hotel or guesthouse within Kigali city is also free. There is no airport surcharge, no delivery fee, no fuel cost passed on for the delivery run. The rate you receive on WhatsApp is the rate you pay.
24/7 Roadside Assistance
If your vehicle has a mechanical problem anywhere in Rwanda - flat tyre on the Musanze road, engine fault outside Akagera gate - call or WhatsApp +250 788 362 035 and a real person responds. We dispatch support or a replacement vehicle. This coverage applies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for the full duration of your rental period.
Spare Tyre and Basic Tools
Every vehicle leaves our fleet with a full spare tyre in good condition, a wheel brace, and a jack. If you get a puncture on a remote road, you have the tools to change it yourself while waiting for our support team to reach you.
Insurance and Vehicle Documents
The vehicle insurance certificate, Rwanda police certificate of fitness, and rental agreement are kept in the glovebox of every vehicle. At police checkpoints - common on all Rwanda main routes - these documents are what officers check. They are always current and valid.
Free Cancellation
Standard bookings can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the confirmed pickup time. No cancellation fee, no penalty, no administrative charge.
What Is Not Included
Fuel
Fuel is the renter's responsibility - this is standard practice across the entire car rental industry worldwide. You collect the vehicle with a confirmed fuel level and return it at the same level. Rent Cars Kigali does not operate a full-to-full fuel policy where you pre-pay for fuel and risk losing what you do not use. You buy exactly what you use. See our guide to fuel prices in Rwanda 2026 for current per-litre rates and station locations.
The Excess / Deductible on Insurance Claims
In the event of an accident where a claim is made, there is an excess - the amount you pay before the insurance covers the remainder. The exact excess amount is stated in your rental agreement and varies by vehicle class. This is the same structure used by every car rental company globally. Ask us to confirm the excess for your specific vehicle before you sign.
Tyres Damaged by Road Hazards
Punctures and tyre damage caused by road hazards - potholes, sharp objects, kerb strikes - are typically the renter's responsibility. This is not unique to Rwanda - it is a standard exclusion in car rental insurance worldwide. Treat Rwanda's roads with appropriate care and the likelihood of tyre damage is very low on paved routes.
Traffic Fines
If you are issued a traffic fine during your rental period - for speeding, failing a checkpoint inspection, or any other traffic offence - that fine is your responsibility to pay. Rwanda police issue fines on the spot at checkpoints. See our guide on what to do when police stop you in Rwanda for exactly how to handle this situation.
Personal Belongings
Items stolen from the vehicle or lost during the rental period are not covered by our vehicle insurance. Your personal travel insurance should cover belongings - another reason why comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for all Rwanda visitors.
Cross-Border Fees
Standard kigali car rental rates cover driving within Rwanda only. Cross-border travel to Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi or DRC requires pre-arranged cross-border insurance and permits, which carry an additional cost. This must be arranged at booking - not on the day of crossing. WhatsApp us with your cross-border plans for a tailored quote.
The Professional Driver Add-On
A professional driver is available on any vehicle for $20/day. This is optional - not included in the base rate. For most first-time Rwanda visitors doing gorilla trekking or a multi-park safari circuit, it is genuinely the best $20 extra spent in Rwanda. Your driver handles navigation, fuel stops, police checkpoint interactions, and the 4:30 AM gorilla trekking departure from Kigali.
