Kigali Car Rental for Students and Backpackers
Here is a story that plays out every week at our office on KN 4 Ave. Three university students walk in looking slightly overwhelmed. They have been travelling East Africa on a shoestring, staying in dorms, eating from markets. Someone told them to come see us. By the time they leave, they have realised that Kigali car rental is actually the cheapest way to see Rwanda when you split the cost -- cheaper than the public buses they were planning, and infinitely better in every way.
That story is worth telling in full. Because if you are a student or backpacker planning Rwanda and you have ruled out car hire in Kigali as too expensive, you are making a maths mistake.
The Maths That Changes Everything
Our cheapest Kigali car rental starts at $35/day for a Toyota Vitz. That is the price for the whole car -- not per person. Here is what that looks like when you split it:
- Solo: $35/day -- similar to a mid-range Kigali guesthouse
- Two people: $17.50/person/day -- cheaper than most dorm beds in tourist-heavy East African cities
- Three people: $11.67/person/day -- genuinely backpacker budget
Now add what you get for that money: freedom to go anywhere in Rwanda, no bus schedules, no shared minibus with bags on the roof, no boda boda in the rain. The cheap Kigali car rental for a group of three or four travellers is one of the best-value decisions you can make in East Africa.
Which Kigali Car Rental Is Right for Backpackers?
Toyota Vitz -- from $35/day
The classic budget car hire Kigali option. Seats 4, fuel-efficient (petrol, excellent on Rwanda's main highways), easy to park anywhere. Not suitable for national park dirt tracks or wet season mountain roads -- but perfectly capable for Kigali city, the highway to Musanze, and the Lake Kivu tarmac road.
Toyota RAV4 2009/2010 -- from $50/day
The backpacker upgrade. Three people splitting a RAV4 at $50/day pays $16.67 each -- almost the same as the Vitz split three ways, but now you have a 4x4. You can go to Akagera. You can handle the Musanze mountain road in any weather. You can drive the dirt track to Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo. Split three or four ways, the RAV4 is the smartest budget car rental in Kigali for travellers who want to see actual Rwanda.
What You Can Do With a 5-Day Budget Kigali Car Rental
Five days, a RAV4 split three ways, $50/day total:
- Day 1: Pick up at Kigali airport or our office. Kigali city -- Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, roadside brochettes in Nyamirambo.
- Day 2: Drive to Musanze (2 hours). Twin Lakes at sunset. Sleep cheap at a Musanze guesthouse ($20-30/night split three ways = $7-10 each).
- Day 3: Golden monkey trekking at Volcanoes NP ($100 permit -- not free, but not $1,500 either). Afternoon at Musanze Caves.
- Day 4: Drive to Rubavu on Lake Kivu (1.5 hours from Musanze). Swim. Napoleon Island bat colony boat trip at dusk.
- Day 5: Drive back to Kigali (2.5 hours). Return the car. Fly out having seen more of Rwanda than most organised tour groups.
Total car cost: 5 days x $50 = $250 divided by 3 = $83 per person for the car. That is less than many single-day gorilla permits and substantially less than any organised tour.
Requirements for Student Car Rental in Kigali
- Minimum age: 23 years old. If you are 21 or 22, one of your group needs to be the nominated driver. See our under-25 car rental guide.
- Valid driving license: Held for minimum 2 years
- Passport
- Deposit: 30% by card, PayPal, or cash USD/RWF -- no need to pay the whole amount upfront
The One Thing Budget Travellers Get Wrong About Kigali Car Rental
They compare the daily rate to a bus ticket. A Kigali to Rubavu bus is $3. A Kigali to Rubavu RAV4 split three ways is $16.67 each. The bus looks cheaper. But the bus drops you in town and then you need boda bodas to your guesthouse, a taxi to the beach, another boda boda to the boat trip. The car takes you door to door, holds all your bags, and stops at every roadside brochette stall you see on the way.
Backpacker Rwanda in a rental car is not a luxury. It is the smart choice.
