Petrol or Diesel? Which Fuel Does Your Kigali Rental Car Take?
Misfuelling - putting petrol in a diesel vehicle or diesel in a petrol vehicle - is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make with a kigali car rental. A misfuelled engine requires draining, flushing, and potentially complete fuel system servicing. In Rwanda, where specialist garages are concentrated in Kigali, this means your road trip stops dead and your wallet takes a serious hit. Rule of thumb for the Rent Cars Kigali fleet: RAV4 and Corolla = petrol. Land Cruiser V8, Hilux, and Minibus = diesel. When in doubt, the fuel type is printed on the inside of your fuel cap door. Check it before you pick up the nozzle at every fill-up.
How Rwanda Fuel Stations Are Labelled
At Total Energies, Rubis, and Engen stations across Rwanda - the three main networks - fuel pumps are colour-coded:
- Green handle / green pump: Petrol (called "essence" on French-labelled pumps)
- Black or yellow handle: Diesel (called "gasoil" on French-labelled pumps)
If you are unsure which pump to use, tell the attendant your vehicle name - "RAV4 petrol" or "Land Cruiser diesel" - and they will direct you to the correct nozzle. Fuel station attendants in Rwanda pump fuel for you - you do not handle the nozzle yourself at most stations.
Diesel vs Petrol - Which Is Cheaper in Rwanda?
Rwanda fuel prices are set by the government and published monthly. In 2026, diesel and petrol are priced within a few francs of each other per litre - there is no significant cost advantage to one over the other for Rwanda road trip budgeting purposes. Fuel Station Coverage Across Rwanda
Fuel is readily available on all major routes:
- Kigali: Multiple Total, Rubis, and Engen stations in Kiyovu, Kimihurura, Nyarutarama, and near the Convention Centre. Fill up before leaving Kigali on any long route.
- Musanze (Ruhengeri): Several stations in town. Fill up here before heading to Kinigi - no fuel at the Volcanoes NP gate.
- Rubavu (Gisenyi): Stations in town on the lake road.
- Kayonza: Stations near the Akagera NP south gate turnoff. Fill up here before entering the park - no fuel inside Akagera.
- Huye (Butare): Stations in town on the way to Nyungwe.
- No fuel inside national parks. Akagera, Volcanoes NP, and Nyungwe have no fuel stations inside the park boundary. Always fill up in the nearest town before entering.
What Happens If You Misfuel
Do not start the engine. If you have just put the wrong fuel in, the moment you start the engine and circulate that fuel through the system, the damage multiplies.
