Tipping in Rwanda: What Is Actually Expected?
Rwanda does not have a strong tipping culture by American or European standards. Nobody will chase you down the street if you do not tip. But there are specific situations where a tip is genuinely appreciated and, in some contexts, expected by international visitors. Here is the breakdown.
Restaurants in Kigali
Mid-range and upscale restaurants do not include a service charge by default. If service was good, a tip of 1,000–3,000 RWF (~$1–$3) for a table of two is appreciated and appropriate. In local restaurants (ibitoke and brochettes spots), tipping is not expected but small change left behind is always welcome.
Gorilla Trekking: Tips Are Expected
This is the one place in Rwanda where tipping is a firm norm and international visitors are expected to contribute. Standard guidance from the park:
- Lead ranger/guide: $10–$20 per person per trek
- Porter (carries your bag on the trek): $10–$15 — highly recommended to hire a porter; it supports the local community around the park
- Trackers (who found the gorilla group): $5–$10 optional but appreciated
Bring small USD bills or Rwandan Francs equivalent for this. Do not tip in large notes where no change will be available.
Hotel Staff
Tipping hotel staff is not required in Rwanda. If someone handles heavy luggage, 500–1,000 RWF is a thoughtful gesture. At upscale lodges in Musanze or Akagera, a small tip for the room attendant at the end of your stay is customary — 2,000–5,000 RWF ($2–$5) per night of your stay.
Rental Car Drivers / Chauffeurs
If you hire a driver with your rental car and they have done a good job — especially on a multi-day gorilla trekking or safari trip — a tip is appropriate and appreciated. Standard guide is $5–$15 per day for excellent service on a longer trip.
Taxi and Boda Boda Drivers
Rounding up is common — if a boda boda trip is 1,700 RWF, paying 2,000 and saying "keep the change" is typical. Tipping Bolt drivers is not built into the app but cash tips for friendly service are always welcome.
What NOT to Do
Do not tip children who approach you in tourist areas — this encourages street begging and is actively discouraged by Rwandan authorities. Do not tip immigration or police officers — it is never appropriate and could be taken as bribery.
