Inema Arts Centre -- Kigali's Creative Heart
Inema Arts Centre is one of those places that changes how you think about a city. Located in the Remera neighbourhood of Kigali, it was founded by brothers Emmanuel and Innocent Nkurunziza and has grown into the most important contemporary art space in Rwanda -- and arguably in East Africa. The building buzzes with resident artists, visiting exhibitions, and the energy of a creative community genuinely thriving.
What You Find at Inema
- Permanent gallery: Vibrant, large-scale paintings by Rwandan and international artists. Lots of colour, lots of life -- unlike anything you see in standard hotel lobby art.
- Resident artists: Several artists work in studios on site. If you visit during working hours, you can watch the work being created and talk directly with the artists.
- Imigongo art: Rwanda's distinctive geometric cow-dung art in modern interpretations. Sold at fair prices directly from the artists.
- Gorilla and wildlife paintings: Original artwork -- not mass-produced prints. If you want to take home a piece of Rwanda that is not a market souvenir, this is where to look.
- Cafe: The Inema cafe serves good coffee and light meals in the garden. Perfect for an extended visit.
- Dance performances: Regular traditional and contemporary dance events -- check their social media for schedule.
