How to Get a SIM Card in Rwanda — The Complete 2026 Guide

A local Rwandan SIM card is one of the smartest purchases you can make on arrival. It gives you cheap data, lets you use WhatsApp (how most of Rwanda communicates), and means you can use Google Maps without eating your international roaming plan. Here is exactly how to get one.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Rwanda

At Kigali International Airport (Easiest)

Both MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda have kiosks in the KGL arrivals hall. Buy your SIM the moment you clear customs — before you even pick up your rental car. Staff speak English and the process takes 5 minutes.

In Kigali City

MTN and Airtel shops are on every main street in Kigali. The MTN flagship store is on KN 3 Ave (near the Convention Centre). Airtel shops in Remera and Kimihurura. Market vendors also sell SIMs but buy from an official shop for reliability.

In Musanze, Rubavu, Huye

MTN and Airtel agents in every major town. If you forgot to buy in Kigali, you can get a SIM in the first town you drive through.

What Documents Do You Need?

SIM card registration is mandatory by Rwandan law. You need:

  • Your passport (original — a photo on your phone is not accepted for registration)
  • You register the SIM to your name and passport number

The process: staff scan your passport, register the SIM to your identity, activate it, and you are done. Takes 5 minutes.

MTN vs Airtel — Which Should You Choose?

MTN Rwanda

  • Coverage: Wider network, better coverage on rural routes and mountain areas
  • Data prices: 1GB for ~1,000 RWF (~$0.90), 5GB for ~3,500 RWF
  • MTN MoMo: Mobile money wallet — useful for paying at local restaurants, fuel stations, and guesthouses that do not take cards
  • Recommendation: Best for road trippers and anyone leaving Kigali

Airtel Rwanda

  • Coverage: Good in Kigali and major towns, slightly thinner in rural areas
  • Data prices: Competitive — similar to MTN, sometimes cheaper on specific bundles
  • Recommendation: Fine for Kigali-only stays or short trips

Our recommendation: MTN. If you are driving outside Kigali — to Musanze, Akagera, Lake Kivu, or Nyungwe — MTN's wider rural coverage makes a real difference for navigation and communication.

How Much Does Data Cost on a Rwanda SIM?

  • 500MB: ~500 RWF ($0.45)
  • 1GB: ~1,000 RWF ($0.90)
  • 5GB: ~3,500 RWF ($3.15)
  • 10GB: ~6,000 RWF ($5.40)
  • Daily unlimited bundle: ~1,500 RWF ($1.35) — best value for heavy users

For a 7-day Rwanda road trip with Google Maps and WhatsApp use, 5–10GB is comfortable. Buy the 10GB bundle on arrival and forget about it.
