How to Get a Discount on Kigali Car Rental -- 8 Real Tricks
The kigali car rental market is more flexible than most visitors realise. Fixed prices are not as fixed as they appear. Having run car hire in Kigali for years, here are the 8 approaches that genuinely reduce what you pay -- not loopholes, just smart booking behaviour that every experienced Rwanda traveller uses.
Trick 1: Book Longer Than You Need
This sounds counterintuitive but it works. If you need a Kigali car rental for 6 days, ask for the 7-day rate. On most vehicles in our fleet, a 7-day booking attracts a 10-15% daily rate discount. The 7-day total is often cheaper than 6 days at the standard rate. Ask us explicitly: "What is your 7-day rate vs your daily rate multiplied by 7?" The saving is usually clear.
Trick 2: Book Direct -- Not Through Aggregators
International car rental comparison platforms (Rentalcars.com, Kayak, Skyscanner Cars) add 15-25% commission to every booking. You pay that commission as the renter -- it is built into the displayed price. Booking directly via WhatsApp with us gives you the operator price without the intermediary margin. The vehicle is identical. The price is lower.
Trick 3: Bring Your Own IDP
Some Kigali car hire companies charge $10-15 to "arrange" an International Driving Permit interpretation if your license is not in English or French. It is not a service they are actually providing -- they are just noting the language. Get your IDP from your home country automobile association before travel (it is cheap and takes a day) and avoid this charge entirely.
Trick 4: Travel in Shoulder Season
June-September is peak gorilla trekking season. Car rental in Kigali during this period is in highest demand and has the least flexibility on price. Travelling in October-November or March-May gives you more leverage to negotiate -- availability is higher, operators are more willing to offer deals to fill the fleet.
Trick 5: Ask About the Older Fleet Models
Our fleet runs from 2004 to 2024 model years. A 2009 RAV4 at $50/day drives the same Kigali-Musanze highway as a 2019 RAV4 at $60/day. For budget travellers on good tarmac routes, the older model is entirely capable and meaningfully cheaper. Ask specifically: "What is your oldest RAV4 and what does it cost?"
Trick 6: Return to Our Office, Not Airport
Airport collection is always free. But airport return sometimes carries an implied fee with some operators. Always ask: "Is there any charge for returning the vehicle to your KN 4 Ave office versus the airport?" For stays of several days with a flight home in the afternoon, driving the car to our office and taking a Bolt to the airport can sometimes save a fee.
Trick 7: Group Up and Rent One Vehicle
The fastest cheap Kigali car rental trick. A $60/day RAV4 carrying four people costs $15/person/day -- cheaper than any other reliable transport option in Rwanda. If you are travelling with others, consolidating into one larger vehicle rather than splitting into two smaller ones is almost always the better economic and logistical choice.
Trick 8: WhatsApp Us Before You Book Anywhere
Send us a message with your dates, destination, and group size before you finalise anything. We look at current fleet availability and often have vehicles available at rates below our standard published prices -- either because a cancellation has opened up a slot or because your booking pattern fits our scheduling optimally. You cannot get this deal by booking through a website. You get it by asking a person directly.
