How to Extend Your Kigali Car Rental Mid-Trip - and What It Costs
It happens to most Rwanda visitors. You planned five days. You are on day four and Lake Kivu still has two more mornings in it, or the gorilla trekking permit came through for one more day, or Akagera was so extraordinary that you booked another game drive. Rwanda has a way of expanding to fill whatever time you give it. If you need to extend your kigali car rental beyond the original return date, here is exactly how to do it.
The Process - How to Request an Extension
One WhatsApp message. That is the entire process for requesting a kigali car rental extension with Rent Cars Kigali.
- WhatsApp +250 788 362 035 as soon as you know you want more days. The earlier you ask, the better - vehicles have other bookings and we need time to check availability.
- Tell us your current return date, your rental agreement reference, and how many additional days you need.
- We check availability - whether the vehicle you have is free for extended use or whether we need to arrange a like-for-like swap if it is already booked for the days you want.
- We confirm the extended rate and new return date. You do not need to return the vehicle and re-collect. The extension is added to your existing agreement.
- Additional payment is settled at extension confirmation - same payment methods as the original booking: MoMo, Airtel, USD cash, or card.
How Much Does Extending Cost?
Extension days are charged at the standard daily rate for your vehicle class - the same rate as your original booking. There is no extension surcharge or penalty fee. If you are extending for 3+ additional days, ask about whether a slightly reduced multi-day rate applies - for longer extensions we have flexibility.
What If the Vehicle Is Already Booked?
This is the most common complication. If your specific vehicle has another booking starting on the day you originally planned to return it, we cannot simply extend your use of that exact vehicle. In this situation we will:
- Check for an identical or similar vehicle available for your extension period - in most cases we can provide a like-for-like swap. You swap vehicles at a convenient location (your hotel, or we meet you on route) and continue your trip.
- If no comparable vehicle is available at Rent Cars Kigali, we will refer you to our partner Kigali Car Hire who operates a fleet of 50+ vehicles. Between both companies, availability gaps are rare.
Extending a Booking with a Professional Driver
If you have a professional driver included in your rental, extension days include the driver at the same $20/day rate - subject to his availability on those dates. For extensions of more than 2 days, confirm driver availability alongside vehicle availability. Rwanda's peak season can see drivers fully booked, in which case we will arrange an equally experienced replacement.
Can You Shorten a Booking?
Yes - if your plans change and you need the vehicle for fewer days than originally booked, Rent Cars Kigali does not charge for the unused days as long as you notify us at least 24 hours before the revised return time. Last-minute returns (same-day notification) may incur a one-day fee depending on circumstances - discuss with us directly on WhatsApp.
One-Way Returns
If you have extended your trip and want to return the vehicle somewhere other than where you collected it - for example, collect at Kigali Airport and return from Musanze because you are flying out from a connecting airport - discuss this at the time of the extension request. One-way kigali car rental returns are available on certain routes. A one-way fee may apply.
