Kigali Taxi Prices 2026: The Real Numbers
Kigali has three main types of taxis: metered taxis, app-based taxis (Bolt, Yego Moto), and unmetered private hire taxis. Prices differ significantly between them — and knowing the difference saves you from overpaying on your first day.
Types of Taxis in Kigali
1. Metered Taxis (White Taxis)
White metered taxis with "TAXI" signs are available at the airport, major hotels, and some taxi ranks. The meter should be running — if the driver tries to negotiate before starting, insist on the meter or find another cab.
- Flag fall: approximately 1,000 RWF
- Per km: 500–700 RWF
- Airport to city centre (12 km): 8,000–12,000 RWF (~$7–$11)
2. Bolt (App Taxi)

3. Unmetered Private Taxis
Drivers that approach you outside the airport or at busy spots. Always negotiate upfront — there is no meter. Common tourist quotes:
- Airport to city hotel: 10,000–20,000 RWF (negotiate down)
- Kigali city trip (any): 3,000–8,000 RWF depending on distance
The local price is often 30–40% lower. Say the price in RWF, not USD — you will get a better response.
Taxi vs Boda Boda vs Rental Car
- Boda boda: Cheapest for short solo trips, uncomfortable with luggage
- Bolt/taxi: Good for Kigali city only, no upcountry coverage
- Rental car: From $35/day, covers the whole country, best for anything beyond 2–3 city days
Night Taxi Surcharge
After 10 PM, expect to pay 20–30% more on metered taxis. Bolt prices fluctuate with surge pricing late at night and during rain. Private hire drivers often quote higher rates after dark.
