Gorilla Trekking Rwanda Cost 2026 — Everything You Will Actually Pay
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is expensive. But most cost guides only mention the permit. This guide covers every real cost involved — so you arrive with the right budget and no surprises.
1. The Gorilla Permit — $1,500 Per Person
The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) charges USD $1,500 per person for one gorilla trek at Volcanoes National Park. This is non-negotiable and includes one hour with a gorilla family, ranger fees, and park entry.
- Book at rdb.rw — official RDB portal
- Peak season (June–Sept): book 4–6 months ahead. They sell out.
- EAC residents (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania citizens): $500
- Rwandan citizens: RWF 50,000 (~$45)
2. Transport to Volcanoes National Park — $60–$170/day
Park HQ is 120 km from Kigali — a 2-hour drive. You must leave Kigali by 4:30–5:00 AM for the 7:00 AM briefing. Your options:
- Self-drive Toyota RAV4 from Rent Cars Kigali: from $60/day. Most cost-effective for 2+ people. Free airport delivery.
- Chauffeur-driven 4x4: RAV4 + driver from ~$80–$100/day total. Ideal if you want to sleep on the way and let someone else handle the 5 AM mountain road.
- Land Cruiser Safari: from $170/day — for groups of up to 7 and maximum comfort on mountain tracks.
- Shared shuttle (tour operator): $80–$120 per person return but fixed schedule, no flexibility
- Private taxi from Kigali: $120–$200 return — expensive with no vehicle during the day
For 2 people splitting a RAV4 for the gorilla trekking day: ~$30–$35 per person — significantly cheaper than any other option.
3. Accommodation Near Volcanoes NP
Most visitors stay one night in Musanze before trekking:
- Budget guesthouses (La Palme, Gorilla Residence): $30–$70/night
- Mid-range (Mountain Gorilla View Lodge): $80–$150/night
- Luxury (Virunga Lodge, Bisate Lodge): $400–$800+/night
4. Porter Hire at the Park — $10–$15
Porters carry your bag on the trek. Strongly recommended — the trail can be steep and muddy. Porter hire directly supports the local community around the park. Pay in cash (RWF or USD).
5. Ranger / Guide Tip — $10–$20 Per Person
Standard for international visitors. Bring small denominations. Cash only. See our Rwanda tipping guide for full breakdown.
6. Meals and Incidentals
- Dinner in Musanze the night before: $8–$25
- Packed lunch/snacks for the trek: $5–$15
- Water for the day: $2–$5
