Does Rwanda Have Airbnb?
Yes — Airbnb operates in Rwanda and listings do exist, mainly in Kigali. But the picture is more complicated than a simple yes, and knowing the details before you book could save you a bad experience on arrival.
What the Airbnb Situation Actually Looks Like
As of 2026, Airbnb listings in Rwanda are concentrated almost entirely in Kigali. You will find apartments, guesthouses, and private rooms listed — mostly in the Kimihurura, Remera, Kiyovu, and Gacuriro neighbourhoods. Outside Kigali, Airbnb listings become very thin. In Musanze (near Volcanoes NP), Rubavu (Lake Kivu), or near Akagera, Airbnb coverage is sparse to nonexistent.
What Works Well with Airbnb in Kigali
- Some genuinely good apartments at competitive prices for stays of 3+ nights
- Useful for longer-stay visitors — expats, NGO workers, business travellers
- A handful of well-reviewed hosts who communicate reliably
- Prices can undercut mid-range hotels for a private apartment
What to Watch Out For
- Fewer reviews than you are used to — Rwanda's Airbnb market is small. A listing with 4 reviews is considered well-established here. Do not expect the 200-review hosts you find in Europe.
- Location descriptions can be vague — "central Kigali" covers a wide area. Always check the pin on the map before booking.
- Power and water interruptions — Rwanda has occasional load-shedding and water cuts. Ask hosts directly whether they have backup power and a water tank.
- Outside Kigali: do not rely on Airbnb — for national park areas, book lodges or guesthouses directly. Trying to Airbnb your way to Volcanoes NP will leave you stranded.
Airbnb vs Kigali Hotels — Which Is Better?
- 1–2 nights in Kigali: A hotel is easier — no key handover logistics, breakfast often included, 24-hour reception
- 3–7 nights in Kigali: Airbnb apartment can make sense if you want a kitchen and more space
- Anywhere outside Kigali: Book lodges directly — Airbnb is not reliable in these areas
