Car Rental in Rwanda Under 25 — What You Need to Know
Young driver rules for car rental in Rwanda are more flexible than in Europe or the USA — but there are still age requirements and some restrictions worth knowing before you book.
Minimum Age for Car Rental in Rwanda
- Absolute minimum age: 23 years old
- Most standard vehicles (sedans, RAV4, SUVs): Available from age 23
- Land Cruiser V8, Prado, luxury vehicles: Most rental companies require 25+
- Your license must have been held for at least 2 years — regardless of your age
Is There a Young Driver Surcharge?
At Rent Cars Kigali, we do not apply a blanket young driver surcharge for ages 23–25 on standard vehicles. You pay the same daily rate as any other driver. Some larger fleet operators in Rwanda do charge $5–$10/day extra for drivers under 25 — always ask before booking.
What Vehicles Are Available for Under-25 Drivers?
- ? Toyota Vitz / Corolla sedan — from $35/day
- ? Toyota RAV4 (2010, 2018, 2019) — from $50/day
- ? Hyundai Tucson — from $50/day
- ? Kia Sorento — from $60/day
- ?? Land Cruiser / Prado — subject to driving experience check, age 25+ preferred
Tips for Young Drivers in Rwanda
- Rwanda drives on the right side of the road — important if you are from the UK, Australia, or Southern Africa
- Police checkpoints are routine — have your license and rental agreement in the glove box
- Download Google Maps offline before leaving Kigali
- If this is your first time driving in Africa, consider adding a driver for the gorilla trekking day — the 5 AM mountain roads are easier with a local at the wheel
Under 23? Your Options
If you are under 23, self-drive rental is not available in Rwanda. But you can still book a chauffeur-driven car — a professional driver handles the vehicle while you enjoy the journey. This is actually a popular choice for first-time Africa visitors of any age.
