Akagera National Park is one of Rwanda's most underrated gems. Home to the Big Five — lions, elephants, leopards, buffalos, and rhinos — it's a proper African safari experience just two hours from Kigali city center.
And the best part? You can drive yourself. With the right car hire from Kigali, a self-drive safari at Akagera is one of the most rewarding experiences you'll have in Rwanda.
Getting to Akagera from Kigali
The journey from Kigali to Akagera's southern gate takes approximately 2 hours via the RN3 highway toward Kayonza. The road is paved and in good condition. From Kayonza, follow signs toward Rusumo — the park entrance is clearly signposted.
Best Car for Akagera
Inside the park, roads are unpaved and can become very muddy during the rainy season (March–May, October–November). A 4x4 is essential:
- Toyota RAV4 2009+ — handles most park roads well
- Land Cruiser V8 — the premium choice for game drives, higher clearance
- Toyota Prado — excellent all-rounder for park driving
Self-Drive vs Guided at Akagera
Self-drive is allowed inside Akagera. However, hiring a driver who knows the park means you won't miss animals that a first-time visitor would drive straight past. Our drivers are experienced in spotting wildlife and know the best game-viewing areas.
Practical Tips
- Start your game drive early — 6:00–9:00 AM is when animals are most active
- Bring plenty of water and snacks — food inside the park is limited
- Book your park permits in advance at akageranationalpark.com
Book your Akagera car hire now — we'll deliver the car to you in Kigali or meet you at the park gate.
