Can You Bring a Drone to Rwanda?

Where You Cannot Fly a Drone in Rwanda
- Volcanoes National Park -- gorilla trekking areas are strictly no-fly. The noise and presence of drones distresses the gorillas and is prohibited by Rwanda Development Board rules.
- Akagera National Park -- no drone flying inside the park without specific research permits
- Within 5 km of Kigali International Airport (KGL)
- Over the Presidential Palace, parliament, military installations
- Within 50 metres of people, vehicles, or buildings without explicit permission
- At night without special clearance

Bringing Your Drone Through Kigali Airport
Declare your drone at customs on arrival. Carry your RCAA permit confirmation and your drone's registration documents. Batteries must be in carry-on luggage (not checked bags) under IATA regulations -- this applies on the international flight to Rwanda, not just internally.
Undeclared drones are occasionally confiscated at KGL customs. Do not risk it -- declaration with proper paperwork takes 5 minutes and protects your equipment.
Insurance for Your Drone in Rwanda
Your standard travel insurance almost certainly does not cover drone equipment or liability from drone use. Check specifically for drone cover before you travel. Some drone insurance providers (like Coverdrone or SkyWatch) offer short-term international policies.
