Travel Insurance for Rwanda -- What You Actually Need
Many Rwanda visitors arrive with inadequate travel insurance -- a standard annual travel policy that excludes medical evacuation, gorilla trekking activities, or high-value camera equipment. Here is exactly what your Rwanda policy needs to cover.
Medical Evacuation Cover -- Non-Negotiable
Medical evacuation from Rwanda to Europe or the USA in a serious emergency costs $30,000-$100,000 without insurance. King Faisal Hospital in Kigali can handle many situations, but complex surgeries, specialist treatment, or evacuation to a home-country facility requires this cover. Any policy without medical evacuation cover is inadequate for Rwanda.
Check your policy for: "Emergency medical evacuation" or "medevac" cover. Minimum recommended cover: $500,000. Some specialist policies cover $1,000,000+.
Activity Cover -- Gorilla Trekking Specifically
Many standard travel policies exclude "wildlife encounters" or "animal trekking" as a specific activity. Some exclude activities at altitude above 2,000 metres (gorilla trekking regularly reaches 2,000-3,000m). Before buying any policy, confirm explicitly that gorilla trekking at Volcanoes National Park is covered as an activity.
Gorilla Permit Cancellation Cover
A $1,500 gorilla permit is an enormous financial loss if you cannot trek due to illness, injury, or a flight disruption. Some specialist travel policies cover "pre-booked activity cancellation" -- check if this applies to wildlife permits and what documentation Rwanda Development Board requires for a permit refund claim.
Adventure Activity Cover
If your Rwanda trip includes Mount Bisoke hiking, Congo Nile Trail cycling, or other physical activities, confirm these are covered. Many standard policies exclude "trekking above 3,000 metres" or "mountaineering."
Equipment Cover
Photographers and drone operators: confirm your camera equipment is covered. Most policies have per-item limits of $500-$1,000 which is inadequate for professional camera bodies. Photography equipment riders or specialist policies are available.
Recommended Policy Types for Rwanda
- Standard with medical evacuation added: adequate for gorilla trekking if activities are confirmed covered
- Adventure travel policy (World Nomads, True Traveller, Battleface): designed for active travel -- usually cover gorilla trekking and most Rwanda activities as standard
- Annual multi-trip policy: good value if you travel more than twice a year
Does Car Rental Insurance Replace Travel Insurance?
No. Our car rental insurance covers the vehicle in case of accident or damage. It does not cover your personal medical costs, evacuation, or permit cancellation. Both types of cover are needed separately.
