Best Things to Buy in Rwanda — The Honest Shopping Guide
Rwanda is not a big shopping destination in the conventional sense, but it has some of the most beautiful and distinctive crafts in Africa. Here is what is actually worth buying, where to find it, and what it costs.
1. Imigongo Art
Rwanda's most unique artistic tradition. Geometric patterns — traditionally made with cow dung mixed with ash and clay, now also produced in acrylic — painted in bold blacks, whites, reds, and earth tones. Every piece is different. Imigongo originated in eastern Rwanda and is found in craft shops across Kigali.

2. Agaseke Baskets
Intricately woven peace baskets — Rwanda's most recognisable craft. The geometric patterns and colours take days or weeks to make. Traditionally given as gifts at weddings and to mark important moments. Lightweight and easy to pack.

3. Rwandan Coffee
Some of the best coffee in Africa. Rwanda's volcanic highlands produce exceptional arabica beans. Single-origin Rwanda coffee is sold in Kigali's specialty coffee shops and supermarkets — and at source cooperatives if you drive through the coffee-growing regions.

- Best source coffee: Drive through Nyamasheke or Gakenke — cooperative farm shops sell direct
4. Akagera Honey
Wild honey produced by communities around Akagera National Park as part of conservation livelihood programmes. Rich flavour, beautifully packaged, directly supports conservation. Available at the Akagera park shop and some Kigali gift shops.

5. Gorilla and Wildlife Artwork
Paintings, prints, and sculptures of Rwanda's mountain gorillas — the country's most iconic image. Quality varies enormously. The best pieces come from artists at Inema Arts Centre in Remera, Kigali. Avoid mass-produced tourist paintings at airport shops.
6. Kitenge Fabric
Colourful African wax print fabric. Rwanda has its own distinctive patterns. Buy by the metre at Kimironko Market (2,000–5,000 RWF per metre) and have something made locally, or use as a wall hanging or tablecloth.
Where to Shop in Kigali
- Kimironko Market — largest market, best prices, most authentic. Go Saturday morning.
- Caplaki Craft Village (KN 4 Ave) — fixed-price tourist craft market. Convenient, honest pricing, good quality control.
- Inema Arts Centre (Remera) — contemporary Rwandan art. Best for imigongo and gorilla paintings.
- Kigali City Market (Nouveau Marché) — more local goods, spices, everyday items.
Getting to the Markets
Kimironko Market is 8 km from the city centre — too far to walk comfortably with shopping bags. Caplaki is on KN 4 Ave, walkable from many hotels. For a proper shopping day hitting multiple markets, a rental car is the most practical option — you can load bags in the boot and move between areas without juggling everything in a boda boda.
